Rainbows

Posted on: October 20, 2008

A few minutes ago I looked out of the window to see that it had begun to pour with rain. Now I’m looking at the most glorious double rainbow and I am reminded of God’s goodness and faithfulness.

On my last night in the US, my landlords held a farewell party for me. Unusually for Philly in August, it was a foul night, dark, cold and pouring with rain. But every time someone appeared at the door, dripping wet, they were smiling and saying, ‘Did you see?’ The whole sky was dominated by a perfect double rainbow which, from our viewpoint at the top of a small hill, seemed to cover the whole world. It was a wonderful thing. Many people gave me gifts that night, for which I was very grateful. But that rainbow, which spoke of God’s unchanging promise, was perhaps the most precious gift.

In the few moments it’s taken me to type this, the rain has stopped, rainbow has disappeared and the sun is almost shining. The sign may be fleeting, but the promise of God which it signifies is never-ending. Which is a great reason to smile on a miserable Monday morning.

It appears to be snowing. Huh.

ETA: Ten minutes later, it’s stopped.  :)

the art of learning deep truths about God and man in the company of friends, whilst drinking tea and eating cake.
