A little bit of history…
Posted on: March 26, 2008
According to the BBC, President Sarkozy announced today that ‘France and Britain have “never been so close”, during an historic address to both houses of the UK Parliament.’
Hmm. Let’s think about that for a minute…
What about the time in the fifteenth century when Henry V was named heir to the French throne and controlled large parts of France directly? And indeed when his son was, for a time, King of both England and France.
Or how about a little earlier, under the Plantagenet kings who ruled a vast swathe of what is now France, right across to the Mediterranean coast?
Or, though it pains me to mention it, the time when a Frenchman crossed the channel accompanied by an army to defeat the English king?
Unless, of course, Sarkozy is suggesting a return to a pre-unification definition of France and intends on devolving power to the ancient provinces. No, didn’t think so.
