Conversational Theology

Archive for January 16th, 2009

I just came across True Womanhood, a blog by a group of American evangelical women ‘in celebration of the thinking Christian woman‘. A lot of the blog is directed against the ‘Prairie Muffin‘ phenomenon which, I’m happy to say, is not yet a noticeable feature of the UK church. And I’m sure there would be some things they say that I’d disagree with, one way or another.

But I was very struck by the truth in the most recent post. So many single women are so eager to be married that they, consciously or unconsciously, change their behaviour in order to attract men, any men. And one time-honoured way of doing that is by flattering the man’s intelligence and playing down your own. I have never been tempted to do this, ever (I know, no one is surprised). But I’ve seen it happen, more often than you’d think. Men, please don’t be taken in by this. Look for a wife who will love the Lord with all her heart and all her strength, yes, and all her mind as well.

Conversational theology:

the art of learning deep truths about God and man in the company of friends, whilst drinking tea and eating cake.
