Humphrey Lyttelton, jazz trumpeter, Old Etonian, ex-guardsman, and panel game host has died. I shall go home and listen to old I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue episodes in the sad knowledge that there will be no more to come.

Unless Humph can be replaced in the same sort of way Paul Merton replaced Willie Rushton or Kenneth Williams on Just A Minute (not the antidote to panel games).

Hello Ros (this is Annabel sorry I know it’s confusing when I do this but it automatically thinks the commenter is Matthew and I’m not very confrontational so don’t like to assert my own identity – which is perhaps of concern…) – Isn’t this sad? I remember feeling similar when John Peel died as Saturday mornings had been a regular thing. Incidentally, what do you think of the Write Stuff quizz? I can’t decide if it’s a bit ‘quote unquote’ (harsh, I know) or if I find it amusing.
I’d just like to say I didn’t put that winking yellow face there. That’s not the kind of thing I do. Just to make that clear.
But it’s such a nice winking yellow face. Though perhaps a little inappropriately placed.
It’s very like the loss of John Peel. I think they always said they wouldn’t continue ISIHAC without Humph and really I think that’s the right decision. It was Humph who transformed the whole thing from moderately entertaining silly games to unsafe-for-driving-hysterical-humour.
I have mixed feelings about Write Stuff, too. I enjoyed it when it was in the 1.30pm slot, but I’m not sure it quite cuts it for the 6.30pm slot. The pastiches sometimes work well but not always. And the quiz itself is very Quote…unquote. Incidentally, I left a note on the BBC messageboard suggesting that an appropriate tribute to Humph would be the axing of Quote…unquote. I think he’d have liked that. ;)
(That was an entirely intentional winking face.)
I like it.
I wonder how many people actually like Q -U?
sorry, ‘it’ was referring to your last point, not, I hasten to add, to the show in question.
Winking faces aside, the best tribute the BBC could offer is to have the entire back-catalogue of ISIHAC online for free download. That would not only be the antidote to sub-standard panel games, but also the antidote to mindless profiteering on the back of genius.
